Most students attending university, about to attend university, or are far into university always have this sinking feeling inside about if they picked the right major. It usually goes like this.
- If I don’t pick a realistic major in uni, I’ll never get a job
- If I never get a job, then I wont make money
- If I don’t make money, I’ll live as bum in the basement of my parents house FOREVER.
If this sounds like you, you might have a bad case of “slippery slope.” According to Wikipedia, a slippery slope argument
“is a consequentialist logical device in which a party asserts that a relatively small first step leads to a chain of related events culminating in some significant (usually negative) effect.”
To put that in english, it basically means you think one event leads to a chain of events therefore, obtaining a “slippery” slope. Slippery slope is one of many logical fallacies and it tends to cause a lot of stress to students. The proper way of thinking is to accept that one event may not lead to another. It isn’t always guaranteed that things will happen in the way you presume them.
Let me give you an example. Most parents want their children to pick majors that help make a ton of money so they’ll become financially independent in the future (i.e engineering, pre-med, nursing, law, business). I totally understand that however, picking something that isn’t with medicine or law doesn’t always mean you won’t get a job. It just matters what you want the most and if you’re passionate about it, there’s no way you’re not getting a job somewhere. I feel like a vast majority of university students settle for what society or their parents want them to do. Most students who do go into tough fields like engineering or pre-med end up getting a well-paying job but they hate every second of it. In my opinion, this is the start to an unhappy life. Your major by any means is not the most important thing in the world. It doesn’t set up your future in fact, it’s just a stepping stone of life. You will most likely still end up with a decent paying job no matter what major you pick.
Keeping that in mind, a lot of university students have trouble with finding what major they want and what they are passionate about. First and foremost, there is a difference between being passionate about something and a hobby. Hobbies are something you do in your free time and passion is what you love and it carries you through your entire life. For me, I loved being creative as a kid. I loved drawing, writing, and colouring random things but, it wasn’t something I wanted to make a reality though. It was just a hobby I would look forward to at the end of the long day. Being passionate about something comes from within, it’s where you see yourself in 5 years from now, or 10 years. It’s where you make your dream, a reality. Your passion for something is what makes you get up in the morning for that 8am (or not). It’s what you do even after uni and it’s what you put the most effort in. The more you are passionate about something, the more effort you put into it and the happier you are.
How do I find my passion? If you can’t figure out where you see yourself in 10 years from now, go experience life more. Take a yoga class. Go to a painting class. Attend a concert. Hike up a gigantic hill. Find what it is you like doing the most and stick to it. Experiencing more life will open your eyes to what you didn’t know you loved. Not to worry, your hobbies will still be there it’s just something you go to when you need a break or time for yourself. The most important thing is to never forget how important your happiness is. Your parents want the best for you yes, but they won’t be here forever. So, pick that major everyone is telling you not to pick and prove them wrong. Be who you want to be and kill it.
